The Derelict

The Derelict is the informal designation for the spacecraft discovered on the Acheron LV-426 moon. In 2122 an unknown warning signal broadcast from The Derelict summoned the Weyland-Yutani commercial hauler USCSS Nostromo to the Acheron moon. The Derelict is believed to have crashed on Acheron several millennia prior to the arrival of the Nostromo.

The ships origins and functions will be explored as it is prominent in the 2012 film Prometheus.

Jean Henri Gaston Giraud a French comics artist aka Moebius was attached to the project for a few days as well, and his costume renderings served as the basis for the final space suits created by costume designer John Mollo.

I doubt there’s anything I can say about the film that hasn’t been said a million and one times by other people, so I’m simply say I thought it was absolutely superb - a pinnacle of the horror genre - and leave it at that.

The set design is so strong with contributions from Ron Cobb. Cobb created hundreds of preliminary sketches of the interiors and exteriors of the ship, which went through many design concepts and possible names such as Leviathan and Snark as the script continued to develop. The final name of the ship was derived from the title of Joseph Conrad’s 1904 novel Nostromo, while the escape shuttle, called Narcissus in the script, was named after Conrad’s 1897 novella The Nigger of the ‘Narcissus’.

The production team particularly praised Cobb’s ability to depict the interior settings of the ship in a realistic and believable manner.

I honestly don’t think I need to tell you that ALIEN is an utterly brilliant exercise in tension and terror, brilliantly realised by one of the most gifted directors in the business.

In this single frame you see how RS crafts his composition with light, smoke and perfect design sensitivity.
